Archers’ Comeback Bid Ends in Region Final Loss
The St. Louis Community College (STLCC) Men's Basketball team closed out its postseason run Saturday night, falling 75–68 to nationally ranked North Central Missouri College in the Region Championship Final at Jefferson College. The Archers advanced to the title game following a dramatic 71–69 comeback victory over Metropolitan Community College in Friday's semifinal.
In the championship matchup, sophomore forward Darric Smith delivered a standout performance in his final game as an Archer, posting 22 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman guard Miyel Taylor added 16 points, while sophomore guard Zac Goss contributed 14 points, helping STLCC stay within striking distance throughout the contest. Despite a determined effort, an early 13-point deficit (18–5) proved too steep to erase against a disciplined Pirates squad.
Head Coach Terry Collins praised his team's resilience and competitive spirit in the season finale.
"After the stirring comeback win over Metropolitan the night before, we played hard from the jump but missed some open looks that created the 13-point deficit," Collins said. "Starting 2‑for‑14 was just a bit too much to overcome. We kept clawing our way back into the game but never quite closed the gap. Credit goes to North Central Missouri. They beat us three times this year, so it is fair to say they were the better team."
Collins also commended the team's sophomores for their contributions on and off the court.
"Although our sophomores finish their careers without the championship they fought for, I am proud of their effort," Collins added. "They have performed well in the classroom and been very generous in sharing their time at various outreach events the team sponsors in the community. I am confident they will represent the college well as they continue to pursue their academic, athletic, and career goals."
At the conclusion of the tournament, the All-Region Team was announced, with STLCC earning two selections.
- Darric Smith — First Team All-Region
- Zac Goss — Second Team All-Region
The Archers conclude their season with pride in their progress, strong individual performances, and a foundation for continued success.
