Archers Show Resilience and Growth in Battle Against Undefeated Lansing
The St. Louis Community College men's basketball team delivered an inspired performance on Saturday, November 22, pushing undefeated Lansing Community College to the limit before falling 73-65 at the Forest Park Campus gym.
The contest was a showcase of resilience and teamwork. The Archers matched Lansing blow-for-blow in the first half, trailing by just two points at the break (34-32). Coming out of halftime, STLCC electrified the home crowd with its best stretch of basketball this season, using stifling defense and fast-break execution to build a 46-36 lead with 14 minutes remaining.
Although Lansing responded with a late surge, the Archers demonstrated they can compete with the best. "The first six minutes of the second half when we built the 10-point lead was certainly our best basketball of the year," said Head Coach Terry Collins. "We battled hard against a tough opponent and showed what we're capable of."
Sophomore forward Darric Smith led the way with a double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Joining him was Stefan Higgins, who recorded his second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Freshman guard Miyel Taylor added 11 points and six rebounds, providing a spark on both ends of the floor.
"We're learning every game," said Smith. "We showed tonight that we can play with anyone. Now it's about finishing strong and staying locked in for the full 40 minutes."
The Archers now turn their attention to a road matchup against Rend Lake Community College on Tuesday, November 25, aiming to avenge a narrow 65-64 loss earlier this month. With momentum from Saturday's strong showing, STLCC is poised to make a statement.
